Grace and Growth: Self-Compassion for My Girls during Tough Times

Updated: Feb 8

Ebony Fowler, M.ed, LCPC

Hey, girl! Let’s talk about how to show yourself some love when things get tough. We all have those moments when we feel like we’ve hit a wall, but it’s super important to remember that you’re not alone. Here’s how to bring in that self-compassion and nurture your beautiful spirit:

  1. Feel It, Don’t Fight It

    • Own Your Emotions: It’s totally okay to feel down or disappointed. Acknowledge what you’re feeling without judgment, your feelings matter, and it’s alright to let them surface.

    • Normalize Struggles: Remember, even queens have off days. Your worth isn’t tied to your successes or failures; it’s just part of being human.

  2. Get Mindful, Girl

    • Stay Grounded: Take a moment to breathe and tune into the present. Whether it’s through a quick meditation or some deep breaths, just be with yourself and observe what’s going on in your mind.

    • Flip the Script: When negative thoughts pop up, challenge them. Instead of “I’m a failure,” try, “I’m learning and growing.” You’ve got this!

  3. Talk to Yourself Like a Bestie

    • Be Your Own Cheerleader: Use positive affirmations and remind yourself of all the dope things you’ve accomplished. You’re stronger than you think!

    • Channel Your Inner Supportive Friend: Picture how you’d encourage a friend in your shoes. Give yourself that same love and kindness.

  4. Lean on Your Tribe

    • Connect with Your Homegirls: Share what you’re going through with trusted friends or a community that gets it. There’s power in sisterhood and talking can lift that weight off your shoulders.

    • Join Affirming Spaces: Get involved in workshops or groups that celebrate Black women. You deserve spaces that uplift you!

  5. Treat Yourself with TLC

    • Prioritize Self-Care: Do things that fill your cup, whether it’s yoga, journaling, or just kicking back with some music. Your well-being matters, boo!

    • Rest Is Not a Luxury: Give yourself permission to rest. You’re allowed to take a break without feeling guilty about it.

  6. Reflect and Celebrate

    • Journal Your Journey: Write down what you’re feeling. Reflect on your growth and the lessons learned through tough times. This is your story...own it!

    • Celebrate Your Strength: Acknowledge how far you’ve come and all the challenges you’ve faced. You’re resilient, and that deserves a high-five!

  7. Consider Professional Help

    • Therapy is Your Friend: If things feel heavy, don’t hesitate to reach out to a therapist. They can help you navigate those feelings and find your path to healing.

Final Reflections

Remember, this self-compassion journey is ongoing, and it’s all about progress, not perfection. Embrace your humanity, give yourself grace, and know that you are very loved. Keep shining, girl! You’ve got this!
